My ED Journey and 5 Things I Learned In Recovery

(trigger warning!!)

This post has been on my mind for a while. I went back and forth on whether I should post anything at all. I usually don't talk about this part of my life but I feel like this is something I should do. So sit back, relax, and bear with me as I share my story.

I developed an eating disorder when I was 12 years old. This was the first time I can look back and say for sure I had a problem, but it had been in the works for many years. I remember looking in the mirror as a 6 or 7 year old and thinking "I am fat. I am too big." The diets started when I was 8 and continued on and off until I was 13. That was when I began dieting and exercising obsessively. I paid my friends older sister to buy me diet pills. I fasted compulsively. I went days or weeks without eating, only to binge on anything in sight when I was done. My health was a joke. I was exhausted constantly, headaches were the norm, and I felt light-headed most of the time. When I got into high school the fasting stopped for the most part, but I found comfort in restrictive diets. Vegan, low carb, low calorie, anything that gave me control. I felt as long as I was on a diet, I was powerful and I could handle anything. I put up a front. I wanted to seem perfect. I needed to be perfect.

Years of anorexia took a toll on my body and one day I started eating. It was like my body went on autopilot, and I physically could not stop binging. I ate anything and everything I could get my hands on. This went on for weeks. Now I can look back and see that my body was starving for nutrition but at the time I just thought I was weak, fat, and completely out of control. That's when anorexia was replaced by bulimia. I spent my senior year of high school spending all my money on food. It was a miserable cycle. Binging, purging, and starving. Once, I had felt in control, now I felt completely out of control.

It's been almost 6 years and 2 treatment centers since then. Last year I would have said I was "recovered", but this year I relapsed. Hard. It started slowly. I flirted with restricting, dipping my toe in, feeling the water. But then, all of a sudden, I was engulfed again. I was swimming in deep water, quickly getting tired. I was so scared. My husband was so scared.

But, with help from my therapist - god bless her - and my angel husband, I was able to stop the downward spiral. I'm back on track now, but I think I'm still a work in progress.

Everyone's journey is different and these are just my truths. But I hope someone might find solace in my words. Here are some things I've learned in recovery.

1) I've learned that recovery isn't always perfect progress. You screw up, you back pedal, and you might even feel like you're back at square one. But you keep going. Because there is no other option. My worst days in recovery are always better than my best days in my eating disorder. 




2) I've learned that recovery sucks. Yep, I said it. It's hard work. You have to be willing to get out of your comfort zone to change. Now, people won't understand this. They won't understand why eating a turkey sandwich fills you with so much anxiety you feel like you might explode. They won't understand your fear of feeling full, or losing control during a meal. Eating and drinking is like breathing to most people and they will look at you with confusion and maybe, dare I say it, disbelief. Have patience with these people. This might be your spouse, your mother, a co-worker or a best friend. Allow them to learn along with you. 




3) I've learned that it's okay to ask for help. It doesn't make you weak. It makes you very, very strong. It takes a strong person to say "I want to change. But I can't do this on my own." You don't need to swallow your struggles underneath a facade of perfect recovery. Let your support team love and care for you. You can't do this without them. 




4) I've learned that we are all worthy of love, safety, pleasure, happiness, and comfort. We are all worthy of delicious food and laughter with good friends. Listen to your body. What are you craving right now? Go get it! Life is too short to deprive yourself of vital nutrition or just dang good food. So go ahead! Get that donut you've been craving all week. Get a hamburger for lunch tomorrow just because! Be good to yourself, and your body will be good to you. 



5) I've learned that without connection, recovery is impossible. Connection to loved ones, connection to god, and a connection to yourself. It wasn't until my second inpatient stay that I fully committed myself to this. I had an IV in my arm, my blood pressure dropped every time I stood up, and my kidney's were beginning to deteriorate. I thought "Okay, if I'm going to give this one more shot, I'm going to give it my all." That meant praying every night, even though I felt no one was listening. That meant eating all my meals, even when I was full. That meant journaling every day, even though I hated myself more than you can imagine. It was a messy, difficult journey. I had to connect with myself, my god, and my family. As I got to know myself better, I got to know my Heavenly Father better. And that is a gift I still cherish today. 


"Behold, he changed their hearts; yea, he awakened them out of a deep sleep, and they awoke unto God. Behold, they were in the midst of darkness; nevertheless, their souls were illuminated by the light of the everlasting word." Alma 5:7


Heavenly Father will help us with our weaknesses. He is our strength! If we allow him into our hearts, he will make our weaknesses and fears strong. I know this is true. I wouldn't be here today if I didn't.


So that's my story. It's long and messy, but it's mine. I'm proud of where I am. I've had ups and downs (maybe more downs than ups), but I've survived.

Today is a good day. But tomorrow might not be. I'm still haunted by my past sometimes; by those thoughts that say "You're not good enough" "You are disgusting" or "You don't deserve to be happy." But those are the days where I say a prayer, snuggle with my hubby, and wait it out.

Sick Day Musings

For a person who happens to get sick more often than average, I sure don't handle sick days very well. They usually start of like this: "This is good. I'm going to take care of myself today. I'm going to kick this sickness in the booty!" and then turn into this: "Why am I here? I should be doing THINGS! I'm useless!!" And then end in a rousing chorus of "This day was a total waste! Why do I have to be sick?! waaaaa..."

Yep. So when I do get sick (like today), the stress levels start to rise. Which of course, is completely counter-intuitive and does nothing to help me get better. And this, my friends, is why I have come up with, drum roll, please,

I am able to give my body the rest it deserves.
You are sick. But getting mad at yourself doesn't do a darn thing. Relax. Breathe. Allow yourself the rest you need and deserve.

I am patient with my body's own healing time line. 
People respond to sickness is different ways. Be patient with yourself. If you give your body the care you need, you will get better. 

three

I respect my body for all it does for me.
Your body is amazing! Think about all it does for you! Not only does it carry you through everyday life, it's remarkably resilient and is built to last you a life time. Now, that is amazing. 

four

I will find joy in the little things today. 
You're here. You're sick. And you can't do anything about it. So why not try to enjoy your day off? Take it easy. Watch a movie, drink your favorite tea, take a nap! Do whatever comforts you. 


I hope these affirmations help bring peace and patience to you! Sick day or not. So, grab a cozy blanket, take a deep breath, and take care of yourself.
Your body will thank you.

Carrot and Caramelized Onion Soup




Today was a day full of gratitude. The sun was shining and my spirits were so high! Why? Well...

I spent my birthday reading letters from my families and friends. My heart feels so full! My husband really knows how to make a girl feel special!




Gratitude is the key to happiness, dontcha think? What are you grateful for today? 


Of course this wouldn't be a Hannah post without a recipe! Now, this meal was perfect to channel that long-anticipated Fall season! Forget about that pesky 80 degree weather with this warm carrot and caramelized onion soup with homemade foccaccia bread! 


I got this recipe here. Sadly, I am not as brilliant of a chef to come up with this beauty! But I can tell you that it is AMAZING. 


CARAMELIZED ONION & CARROT SOUP
  • 3 large onions, sliced
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 5 lbs carrots peeled and sliced into coins
  • 3 large yukon gold potatoes peeled and cut into ½ inch pieces
  • 1 cup celery sliced
  • 32 oz carton vegetable stock 
  • salt and pepper to taste
 INSTRUCTIONS
1) Cook onions and olive oil over low heat until well-caramelized and a medium to dark golden brown, stirring infrequently.

2)Add carrots, potato, and celery and cook for another 10 minutes, tossing well to coat with olive oil and onions.

3)Add vegetable stock, turn heat to medium high, and bring to a rapid boil. Cook until vegetables are very tender almost falling apart- about 20 minutes.

4)Blend with an immersion blender until completely smooth (I used my blendtec in two batches and it worked great!)

The homemade foccaccia will be another post, once I perfect the recipe! But doesn't this look divine? All vegetables, rich flavor, and tons of nutrients! Enjoy this warm meal with your sweetheart! (post-meal cuddling required).

Twix Cookies



This recipe came to me in the parking lot of At Home. In the car with my husband, the exchange went a little bit like this: 
GASP "WHAT if I put dates on top of crackers and dip them in chocolate? HOMEMADE TWIX!" After my husband almost had a heart attack from my sudden recipe outburst, he agreed it sounded delicious!  


This simple, 3 ingredient recipe is rich, caramel-y, and oh-so delicious. 

You will need: 

Your choice of round crackers 
Dates
Dark chocolate bar or chips



This recipe is as simple as it gets. Throw your dates in a food processor until a big sticky ball forms. Take a butter knife and gently (emphasis on GENTLY) spread a thick layer of your date puree on your crackers. Casualties will be had in the form of broken crackers. Try not to curse too much when this happens. You may need to warm your date paste in the microwave for 20 seconds to make it a little softer.

Once all your crackers are ready, throw them in the freezer while you melt your chocolate! You can melt it in a double boiler or in the microwave, stirring frequently to prevent your chocolate from burning. 

Dip your crackers in the melted chocolate and then put them back in the freezer to set!

Aaaaand Ta-da!



Ahh. Chocolate-y heaven.

Coconut Date Balls




These coconut date balls are my go-to "there's no chocolate in the house and I need something sweet STAT" treat! These little bites boast an amazing caramel-y flavor that will knock your socks off and make your sweet tooth very happy! And as an added bonus, each ball has 2 grams of fiber and calcium and vitamin C! What more could you want in dessert?

Makes 10-12 balls

Ingredients:
12 medjool dates, pitted
1/2 c. shredded coconut
1 tbs. maple syrup
coconut for rolling

Throw all your ingredients in the food processor and blend until a big, sticky ball forms. Scoop onto a plate and/or wax paper. (I used a cookie scoop for more even balls). Roll each ball in coconut to finish! Store in an air tight container in the fridge.


These beauties are another one of those recipes that looks impressive but is actually a piece of cake! Enjoy these little balls of sweet energy!

Vegan sushi with cauliflower rice!

This recipe is to die for! Takes about 30 minutes to prepare, but looks like you slaved for hours perfecting these little gems. Also, you get 1 absolutely delicious serving of vegetables in one meal which is always a plus for this fruit-and-sweets-loving girl!




Serves 3-4

Ingredients:
1 medium head of cauliflower
your choice of veggies
(carrots, green onion, avocado, button mushrooms, cucumber, bell peppers; whatever your little heart desires! You do you.)
3 sheets of nori


Start off by steaming your cauliflower in the microwave. I forgot to take pictures of this part. (Note to self: learn how to blog.) It took 10 minutes in my microwave. While that's steaming start cutting your veggies! To get the thin slices, I used a vegetable peeler but a mandoline would work much better!

(2nd note to self: Make sure your avocado doesn't get brown before you take pictures. See 1st note above.)


Once your cauliflower is steamed, strain the water and pulse in a blender or food processor until rice consistency!


When you have cauliflower rice, stick it in the freezer to cool. If it is too hot it will perforate your nori! Once it is cool, put your cauliflower rice in cheese cloth, a thin kitchen towel, or between two paper towels to get out the excess water. This is super important! You will have very soggy, yucky sushi if you skip this step! You will be surprised at how much water is hidden in the rice!


Now you're ready to roll! Spread a thin layer of rice on the nori, making sure to leave a small edge. Take a break to do your nails before you take pictures. Layer your veggies thinly across the first half of the nori and then roll! Go slowly and use both hands to keep it tight!

Ta-da! Vegan veggie sushi! Serve with soy sauce or Sriracha if you like a little kick. Enjoy this simple, impressive, and, most importantly, delicious meal!

3 detox juices


I have to admit that I got caught up in the juicing craze. After I saw Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead I was hooked. Also I thought if I didn't do a 60 day juice fast right then and there I would surely die from all the TOXINS floating around in my body!


Well, it turns out I didn't die. I don't have and evil army of toxins marching around in my blood just waiting to make their next move. But I have become a bit of a juice fanatic! Juicing is a great way to give your body a super concentrated slam dunk of nutrients, all in one brightly colored drink! And they taste great to boot! 


When I'm feeling a little sluggish or stressed, I whip out our juicer for a powerhouse of fruits and veggies. Perfect to get my energy up and give my body the nutrition it needs! 


Here are 3 of my favorite juice recipes! Enjoy the lovely nutrition!



Green Machine:
2 leaves green chard
3 leaves of Kale
1 1/2 c. green grapes
1/4 small lemon
1 thumb of ginger
1 med. cucumber


Just "beet" it:
1/4 lg. beet
2 large carrots
1 leave of green chard
1 1/2 small red plums
1/4 medium cucumber
1/4 small lemon
1 thumb ginger



Sweet potato sunrise:
1/2 large sweet potato
1/2 lemon
1 thumb ginger
1 1/2 small red plum
3 large carrots



Take a deep breath, drink some juice, and soak up some sun. Your body will thank you.
